Obesity is a growing problem in most parts of the world. In most countries a significant proportion of the population are overweight or obese.  It has been proven that losing excess body fat and living a healthier lifestyle will help you to live longer, look better and have more energy.

 

Most people associate weight loss with good health, but this is not always the case.  Many weight loss diets deplete the body’s fluid levels and muscle mass.  This can cause a rebound effect in weight gain, damage the immune system and, in some cases, cause irreparable harm to a person’s health.

 

Body composition (or the fat to muscle ratio) should be the focus of any “weight loss” programme.  Reducing body fat while preserving muscle mass is the number one Biomarker of Ageing and has been shown to be one of the best ways to promote good health, improve body shape and increase longevity.

Case Study:


DI had become obese and as she was appraoching 50 years of age wanted to lose weight to ensure good health in her old age.  In fact, surviving to old age was probably the real challenge.  Her doctors indicated that DI would be a candidate for stomach stapling, however she would have to lose 20kg before they would operate.  DI began using the Optifast system of weight loss.  Within 3 months she had lost 25kg in weight.  She subsequently underwent stomach stapling and has now lost a total of 75kg.  The interesting part of this case is that before losing weight, DI was taking 3 different diabetes medications, each at very high dose, as well as some fluid-reducing blood pressure medications.  After losing the weight she has stopped taking all these medications.  A fantastic example of how losing weight can improve health.
