Men's Health: Help Me, I Can't "Pee"

Growth or "hyperplasia" of the prostate gland causes a number of urinary issues in older men.  Progression of such changes can lead to cancer of the prostate.  Early symptoms of prostate trouble include:

• difficulty urinating,
• unable to fully empty your bladder
• dripping after urinating
• reduced flow rate
• interupted sleep (need to get up to pee)
• urinary infections

Conventional treatment utilises medicines that block the production of a potent form of testosterone called 5-DHT.  While this helps a lot of men, there are other hormones involved and indeed other metabolic pathways that are involved.  This seems obvious, since if it were solely due to high testosterone levels, then why wouldn't younger men get prostate problems?

For example, did you know that prostate gland tissue comes from the same source in a developing embryo as breast and uterine tissue?  In other words, estrogen (usually thought of as a woman's hormone) plays a role with the prostate gland in men.

Prevention is better than cure
